Africa – here I come! My good friend (we each stood up for one another at our weddings), has lived in Africa for over 20 years and in all that time regretfully, I have not gone to visit her. Since her time in Africa she has lived in various places throughout Africa but currently makes her home in Pretoria with her husband and boys. I cannot wait to see her home and have her introduce me to her world and visit my first African safari!
Completed on October 17, 2011; What a wonderful adventure! We were gone for 28 days and visited Johannesburg, Pretoria, Kruger Park, Cape Town – in South Africa, Victoria Falls – Zimbabwe and Nogma and Chobe Park in Botswana (plus a few very fun days in Germany before arriving). It was SO much fun to hang out with Cindy and her family and get to know Seth and Jacob! The animals surprised me more than ever – so many and so amazing. We saw all the big 5 and many more. Here are some highlights:
Years ago, when it seemed I had more time I used to paint; oil, acrylic and water colors – but it’s been a while now… So, it’s time to get back at it! For the past 3 years I’ve had an idea of painting a large canvas of a vineyard inspired from one of our trips wine tasting in Temecula, California. So wish me luck – if it turns out good you may see it hanging in my home!
I love kayaking…okay, maybe I just like the idea of kayaking, either way I’ve always wanted to do it more than just at an all-inclusive holiday resort. The idea of kayaking on the west coast in the ocean amongst killer whales and together with a bunch of girlfriends would not only be exhilarating but also a ton of fun!
A date has been picked for this trip – September 4-7, 2015. I am just putting together the weekend event. Let me know if you are interested in coming!
I am so excited that I get to do this sooner than later! In Dec. 2010 we head to Costa Rica for 2 weeks. We have rented a gorgeous home in the heart of 60 acres of rain forest. I can’t wait to explore a whole new ecosystem, fly down a zip line, surf, taste new foods and learn about a new culture. If you’ve been there before I’d love to hear what your favourite things were to do and see. Looking forward to sharing our pictures and experiences with you!
Completed – Dec. 31, 2010; Home from Costa Rica! What an amazing part of the world! We saw so much wildlife (many of which kept us up at night with their noises and woke us up too). The white sand beaches, rain forest and of course the food was ALL wonderful. Yes, we did the longest zip-line course – 13 all together. (See the attached video.) Aleia especially enjoyed the monkeys! The roads are not the best and definitely some crazy drivers, but if you can avoid most of the potholes, then you’re OK. We also went in-land to visit the Arenal volcano and jumpforadan water slide rentals, which is still active…but unfortunately we were socked in by the clouds of the nearby Monte Verde rain forest. Having said that however, we were fortunate enough to be upgraded into a suite at a wonderful hotel with many natural hot pools and despite the weather the rolling hills it reminded us of being in Europe. Check out the websites under “links” for both the home we rented and the hotel we stayed at.
I did the 12 day Wildrose Cleanse. It involved taking 3 pills of each; Biliherb, Laxaherb, Cleansaherb and a series CL Herbal Extrac drops in water (very horrible I might add) at both breakfast and dinner. There was a list of recommended foot to eat and not to eat. I was told many things about this cleanse – like how much weight I would lose, how healthy I would feel…, but in the end, despite being very strict with my pill in-take, food choices, etc., I lost maybe 2lbs and found myself in the washroom several times a day. My friend Linda asked why on earth I put this item on my list –she said it was one that she would put on her “50 things NOT to do before 50!” and I now agree.
It was an experience, but one that I will not do again anytime soon. On to tackle something more fun on my list.
I actually once started a running club at a place I worked called the “I Hate Running Club”. The club was intended to take non-runners (such as myself), even haters of running (me again), and teach them (thank you Running Room) to run and maybe even like it. Well I can’t say I’m a great runner now, nor can I say that I love running, because I still do not, but what I can say is that I haven’t given up on the belief that one day I can and will run, at the very least, a half marathon. I am in good health and in fairly good shape so there is no reason I cannot do this. I am also of the belief that if I were to injure myself or for some reason were no longer able to run that I would regret that fact that I did not do it more often…so here it goes. Anyone want to join me? I will need LOTS of support and encouragement on this one! Hmm – where should I run it…somewhere warm, but not too hot, NO hills, fun place to celebrate afterwards, close to a nice spa….
Completed – May 26 – 27, 2012; After not enough training, 3 girlfriends (Shannan, Carol and Lana) and I ran the ½ Corked Marathon in Osoyoos, British Columbia. The race sold out in 3 minutes! We were lucky to get in! This 1/2 marathon led us on a route from winery to winery where we sampled both food and wine (but mostly wine) along our run. We ran (yes ran, not walked) the entire race in warm sunny weather, we needed hughes air co and had a fabulous time! The weekend was filled both laughter and tears – starting with Lana and I getting lost from Kelowna to Ossoyoos, pool time with cocktails, a wonderful dinner where Tom (Carol’s husband) also joined us (he and the kids were also our cheering squad along our route) and the passing of their dog Hogan during our run – very sad.
Thank you to my friends for your support for allowing me to check off one more item from my 50 list!
I am so VERY excited about this trip. Recollection of doing a Europe trip with Brieanne in the summer between her grade 9 and 10th year brings back fond memories and I cannot wait to do it with Aleia in the summer of 2014. I think we’ll visit some of the same places, such as the Neushanstien Castle, an opera in Verona and of course Venice, but other than that we’ll harness up our backpacks and with a train pass in hand see where the tracks take us!
The planning has begun! With the summer of 2014 fast approaching, we have started pulling out maps, searching the internet and exploring possibilities…. If you have ANY suggestions or ideas like Mommy and me dresses, please let us know! We are currently looking into traveling to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and to France!
This trip was postponed from the summer of 2014 to this next summer. Aleia and I just booked a flat and the opera – Romeo & Juliet, in Verona, Italy. Just starting to make our plans! Any ideas, please share them with us!
The last family photo we had taken was when Aleia was 6 months old. WOW – where does the time go! I am not sure if it will be a picture in the fall leaves or in a studio or exactly what we’ll end up with, but either way I hope we do it more than once over these next five years as we’re certainly not getting any younger and the girls both continue to change so much each year.
Completed April 2011; After12 years we finally did it! We were thrilled to have Natalie Santano do our photos. Thanks to my sister-in-law, we were SO lucky to get in to her since she is booked up several months in advance. We had lots of fun doing them, despite a little drizzling rain here and there. Our next photos will NOT be 12 years from now. http://nataliesantano.com/)
Years ago I worked at a company where as a group everyone would regularly go and donate blood to the Red Cross. At the time I did not weigh enough so I could never participate. Like most people however I did not mind too much as the thought of volunteering to have someone poke a needle in me wasn’t at the top of my list of fun things to do. Over the years however and after having been poked by several needles (between my two pregnancies etc…) I have often thought this is something I want to do…so once I exceed the 110lb threshold, which I suspect will happen sometime in the next five years, the upside to weight gain is that I can finally contribute to the blood bank.
I know, I know…I should have done this forever ago, so this is long overdue and something I need to get done before the end my 45th year. Got a meeting set for mid-May. Finally I hope we will get it done!
